In light of COVID-19 and the stay-at-home orders, many are seeking a new adventure. Whether you want to see the world solo, or you’re looking for a family-friendly vacation, there has never been a better time to hit the road. And with fear on the rise over health and safety, an RV is starting to look like a pretty convenient alternative to hotels and AirBnb.
Even once you’ve decided to purchase an RV, the options are endless, and many feel inhibited by their vehicle. But there is a common misconception that you have to have a truck in order to tow an RV — that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Today’s technology and innovation has created multi-function travel trailers that can be towed by SUVs and crossovers, even some can be towed by cars. If you already have an SUV, you don’t need to buy a new vehicle, you just need to find an RV that works for your lifestyle while not exceeding your SUV’s towing capacity.
How Do You Know What Size RV Your SUV Can Tow?
Before we take a look at some of the best trailers to tow with SUVs, it’s important that you figure out what your SUV is capable of towing. Feel free to follow along with the steps below.
Check your SUV’s manual to find the towing capacity. On average, SUV’s are typically ranked between 1k – 5k towing capacity. Of course, there are exceptions. So, you’ll want to confirm before you make any decisions.
Add the trailer’s Cargo carrying capacity (CCC) — this is the amount of weight your trailer can carry — to the dry weight of your trailer to confirm the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). This number should be compared to the number you previously found in step 1, as the GVWR cannot exceed your SUV’s towing capacity.
Make sure you account for your hitch-weight rating — each hitch has a maximum weight it can support. You’ll want to check that number against the RV’s “tung rate.” If the tung rate exceeds your hitch’s weight rating, you may run into some issues down the road.
