RV camping is one of the most adventurous ways to spend a family vacation. While your family can find fun at just about any campground out there, there are some that cater specifically to families with kids by providing a wealth of organized or outdoor activities. Luckily, Scenic RV’s home state of Wisconsin is full of family-friend campgrounds, and we’ve rounded up a few of our favorites to help make sure the entire family has a blast on your next RV vacation.
For starters, Door County is one of the best places for families to visit in Wisconsin, and Jellystone Parks are some of the most family-friendly campgrounds out there. There are more than 75 of these Yogi Bear themed campgrounds around the US and Canada, and this one on the Door Peninsula is a great place to take the kids. When you’re not out enjoying the small towns, boutique shopping, local food, and miles upon miles of shoreline in this popular vacation area, you’ll find plenty of family fun from your home-base in the center of Door County at Jellystone Park. This campground has mini golf, shuffleboard, a game room, a playground and three heated pools to keep the family busy. You’re also only 1/3 of a mile away from the cool waters of Green Bay, and the park has scheduled activities from mid-June to August. The kids might even get to see Yogi Bear while they are there!
If state park camping is more your style, you’ll love staying at Peninsula State Park for your Door County vacation. With a beach, bike trails, a lighthouse and 8 miles of Green Bay shoreline, it’s the perfect getaway for the outdoorsy family. Take in the view of the bay from the bluffs or get out on the water using the kayak launch ramp at Nicolet Bay. You’ll also find an 18-hole golf course and a summer theater on site. We’re not the only ones who love this stop in Door County though – it’s tough to get a reservation here so plan on booking a year in advance!
Because Door County is one of the best places to vacation in Wisconsin, we had to give you plenty of options to make sure you find the right one for your family. Another popular family stop is Frontier Wilderness Campground in Egg Harbor. This park has mini golf, three playgrounds, an indoor pool, an arcade and an outdoor bounce house, so it’s unlikely you’ll hear the phrase “I’m bored” from your kids on a vacation stay here! They bill themselves as a family campground so you’re likely to run into other families you can make friends with, and the kids will have no trouble finding playmates. Make sure you plan time to get out and see the quaint towns that Door County is known for.
If a lake filled with giant inflatable slides and obstacle courses sounds right up your kids’ alley, then Smokey Hallow Campground is the place to go. Located north of Madison, just a short drive from Lake Wisconsin, this campground is designed to have family friendly activities happening all week long. The list of activities on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the summer is endless, from giant shopping cart rides to carnival games like the dunk tank. Kids of all ages can participate in temporary airbrush tattoo booths, build-a-bear events, ice cream sundae socials, outdoor movies, lemonade stands, and so much more. Even on days without events, you can use the mini golf course, pedal carts, and a jumping pillow to name a few of the on-site attractions. In August, head to the nearby town of Lodi for Susie the Duck Day featuring rubber duck races and festival fun.
This RV resort along the lower Wisconsin River is great for both parents AND kids. The kids will love playing at “Liza’s Lagoon,” the on-site inflatable sports park with a trampoline, slides and a climbing wall. Mom and dad can enjoy live music events during the summer and take the family to the on-site bar and restaurant to avoid cooking and cleanup after a long day of adventuring. The whole family can get together for a canoe, kayak or tubing trip down the river. You certainly won’t be roughing it at this RV resort – in fact, the resort’s banquet hall is so upscale that it’s a popular spot for weddings.
Another one of the most popular vacation destinations in the Badger State is Wisconsin Dells. Known as the “Waterpark Capital of the World,” this area around the Wisconsin River has multiple massive water parks. The river is lined by beautiful cliffs known as “dells” or sandstone formations carved by glaciers. Whether you want to experience theme parks or nature, Holiday Shores is the perfect home base to explore from. This RV resort features pull-through sites with blacktop pads and full hookups to make camping easy for everyone. If you’re looking for fun by the water, you don’t even have to leave the campground as it’s situated on the shores of the Wisconsin River itself. There’s a pool, kiddie pool, waterfront beach and a floating inflatable obstacle course. You can dock your own boat on site or rent pontoon boats, kayaks, and paddle boards to explore the upper Wisconsin River. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take water skiing lessons, go wake surfing or even join a guided jet-ski tour of the upper Wisconsin River. This campground is perfect for the family who likes to have fun in the sun!
